rock climbing course north wales
rock climbing course north wales
Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.
If you have enjoyed a half day taster session or one of the many indoor climbing walls and would like learn/know more then our starter course is the perfect introduction. North Wales is the home of British Mountaineering and the Snowdonia National Park is a stunning background.

Our 2 day course is instructed by qualified Mountain Leaders who live and work in the North Wales mountains. The course takes place at a number of suitable crags with brilliant views.

Day 1.

Once at the climbing venue we will distribute the safety equipment before warming-up and running through the techniques that climbers use to move up the rock - good footwork and body control combined with forward thinking are just as important as physical strength. We'll then set up some rope systems together and look at the core climbing equipment - harness, boots, ropes and belay devices - before climbing some routes with a top rope.

We will help you understand and practice all the key issues involved in climbing safely: rope work, knots, belays, placing protection and descending.

The topics we cover include:

The crag environment - A key part of climbing outside is understanding and foreseeing potential hazards, which in turn allows us to minimise them. We also need to understand the access issues and ethics involved climbing outside so that we can continue to use the crags, many of which are on private land.
Movement and technique on the rock - how climbers use the natural holds in the rock to climb upwards. We will look at body position, footwork and specific climbing moves such as rockover's, laybacking and jamming.

Rock climbing equipment – how to select and use harnesses, belay plates, climbing hardware and ropes.

Rope work and belaying techniques - how two climbers use the rope and work as a team to ensure each others safety.

Methods of climbing a route - top-roping, seconding and leading
Protecting a climb - how the equipment works together to form a safety system.

Belays – the core principle behind choosing anchors.

Abseiling - we teach these skills as you are climbing so that the learning process is as natural and enjoyable as possible.

Day 2:

We reinforce the skills learnt on the first day and also look at:

Advanced rope work - a lot of climbers will only have used single ropes if they have been climbing indoors - we will look at both single and half ropes, choosing the correct belay device for the ropes you are using, how to belay using various rope controllers and how to tie into the anchors.

Advanced climbing equipment - we will look at carabiners, quickdraws, the rack of protection devices (cams, wires) that you will carry and how to arrange the gear logically and consistently on your harness so that you know where to find the gear when you need it.

Belays / belay management - we will look at constructing safe, bomb proof belays that are fully equalised, plus how to plan ahead to avoid common problems.

Advanced belay skills - we will look at thinking ahead and when to give slack and when to minimise the amount of rope out.

Protecting routes - bolts and natural protection. Learn how to choose the correct gear quickly, seat it securely and extend it correctly.
Finishing routes and getting back down - how to thread the belays safely and communicate with your partner effectively
Route descriptions, climbing terminology and grading systems.
